On October 15th, 2017 the dreadful fires that occurred in Portugal burned 200 000 ha (according to the European Forest Fire Information System) and killed 45 people. Thousands of animals have died mainly sheep, goats, poultry, and dogs. In this region, most people have small properties and depend on agriculture and cheese making. Only in Oliveira do Hospital municipality at least 9000 sheep have died. For a small country like Portugal, this is a catastrophe. Farm animals that survived have now nothing to eat since the pastures, hay and feed rooms have been burn to the ground.

Hundreds of volunteers have moved there, including some veterinarians that traveled along the area trying to help animals and people. According to them thousands of animals are burned. Sheep and goats have their udders burned, they can’t be milked and end with mastitis and die. Dogs have their paws burned too.

After these first days burying the dead and dealing with the living the life of these people has to start to return to normality and to do so, they need food for their animals. As Portugal had no rain for the last 6 months this situation is even more complicated.

The Portuguese Government was supposed to solve these problems but it seems to be delayed and so the Portuguese Small Animal Veterinarian Association (APMVEAC) started collecting money through a solidarity account since October 19th and has already sent to the area 14 tons of hay and 1 ton of pet food by a local distributor and will send next Monday another 25 tons of hay.

For many people the animals are they livelihood and they depend on them. To help families overcome such devastating circumstances, providing them a mean to again support themselves, gives them hope and strength to rebuild their lives.
